Arul George Scaria

Short bio

Arul George Scaria is a professor of law at the National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru, India. He is also an affiliate faculty of the CopyrightX course offered under the auspices of Harvard Law School.

Arul teaches, researches, and writes on issues at the intersection of law, technology and society. With a career that has spanned academia, research, and legal practice, Arul attempts to bring broader perspectives to his teaching and research.

He received the IMPRS-CI scholarship for his doctoral research at the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition and he was awarded doctoral degree with ‘summa cum laude’, the highest recognition for doctoral dissertation in Germany. His post-doctoral research was at UCL, Belgium.

He has previously worked as Co-Director of the Centre for Innovation, Intellectual Property, and Competition (CIIPC) and Associate Professor at NLU Delhi; and as CSIR-NIF Fellow at the National Innovation Foundation (NIF), India. He has also practiced law in trial courts and the Kerala High Court.

His expertise is highlighted through his numerous publications, including two sole-author books. He has also been invited to talk at various international forums including World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO).

  • Appointed by the Delhi High Court as an Amicus Curiae (2024-) in ANI v. OpenAI, the first GenAI related copyright litigation in India.
  • Visiting researcher at the Humboldt University, Berlin (2024), as part of a faculty exchange funded under the Indo-German Partnership in Higher Education (IGP) programme of the University Grants Commission (UGC) and DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service).
  • Cited in the 289th Report of the Law Commission of India on ‘Trade Secrets and Economic Espionage (2024).
  • Member – Committee Constituted by the Chief Justice of the High Court of Karnataka to frame draft rules regarding establishment of an Intellectual Property Division in the High Court of Karnataka (2024).
  • First academic to be appointed by the Delhi High Court as an Independent Expert by the Delhi High Court under IP Division rules – Phonographic Performance Limited v. Lookpart Exhibitions and Events Private Limited (2022)
  • Visiting Faculty under the Erasmus+ programme at University of Bergen, Norway (2018, 2019)
  • Summa cum laude (“the highest distinction”) for doctoral dissertation – Awarded by the Ludwig Maximilans Universität (LMU), Munich – 2012
